I am grateful for the opportunity to address this conference of African Planners. I know that for you this is part of your biennale pilgrimage; you come to Durban every year to discuss matters pertaining different aspects of planning. As with all professions, this is an important time to reflect on the changing environment in which you practice your craft; deliberate on the developments in your profession and explore possible directions for future research, innovation, and teaching. More importantly, as a multi-disciplinary profession, you meet to reflect on how changes in things such as the global economy, politics, health, environment, agriculture, technology and investment climate affect your work.
